Tinker Hatfield

June 11, 2012

“When you sit down to design something, it can be anything, a car, a toaster, a house, a tall building or a shoe, what you draw or what you design is really a culmination of everything that you’ve seen and done in your life previous to that point.”
- Tinker Hatfield

Self-Help for Nerds

October 26, 2011

“Whether it’s games, alcohol, painted figurines, film continuity, or conversations where we’re convinced someone doesn’t like us because of something we said, nerds obsess. We zealously deconstruct. We have that very active internal monologue. I think many of the things we undertake are, in part, attempts to drown out that monologue. We are hyper-self-aware. We have difficulty ‘chilling out.’ We tend to suffer from depression and anxiety. Sometimes it can get really bad. If you’ve never had a panic attack, for example, I’ll describe it thusly: Imagine being fucked in the heart. In most of these cases, barring severe chemical imbalances, the raw material here is obsession, and with practice obsession is harnessable for good.”

The Vignelli Canon

August 13, 2011

The Vignelli Canon has often been deemed as The Holy Grail of the graphic design community. As with all things that command praise and exude greatness, I was skeptical at first. However, I have since given it a proper read-through and it gets my stamp of approval. This is a must read for any aspiring graphic designer.

“White space for me is a very important element in graphic composition. It is really the white that makes the black sing [...] In a world where everybody screams, silence is noticeable. White space provides the silence.”
- Massimo Vignelli

Hilarious and profound. Word.

Doing What I Can

July 7, 2011

“Your life, and my life, is not so predictable
Me and you, gotta know, which way we want to go
My life, has been, an up and down struggle
But now, today, I know which way I gotta go…”

Me and you like Tony! Toni! Toné!
