Hoefler & Frere-Jones

I’ve spent the last week or so dissecting and analyzing the layout of Wired magazine. As part of my research, I started to dig into the typefaces that the publication uses. I found that most (if not all) of the typefaces used in the magazine were designed by Hoefler & Frere-Jones.

It’s kinda funny… I’m supposed to be studying the layout of the magazine (“recreating the almighty grid”), but I’m more interested in the type choices.

My layout instructor showed me these posters designs by Methane Studios. They have a niche for doing concert posters for indie bands. They’re based out of Atlanta and have been around since 1998, so they’re obviously successful at what they do.
